By Chief Joseph Ford, Sr
July 17, 2015

On the evening of Saturday July the 4th 2015 Solomons Volunteer Rescue Squad & Fire Department members and their families were preparing for the upcoming annual fireworks show on the island. At approximately 1805 Calvert 911 started to receive calls for a boat explosion at the Spring Cove marina in Solomons with multiple people injured and burned. Solomons VRSFD was automatically dispatched and responded with several members and a medic unit from Calvert ALS that was in the area. First arriving units found chaos as 10 people from children to elderly were found with severe burns. Solomons units requested assistance from surrounding mutual aid companies. Units from Calvert, St Mary’s and Charles Counties responded within minutes. Within minutes all patients were loaded into ambulances and transported to Washington DC burn centers by ground.

Thankfully incidents of this size are rare in southern Maryland, and to this end an After Action Review will be conducted by the Chief of Solomons VRSFD in an effort to educate and improve emergency response to such incidents in the future. The review is being presented to 50 first responder who responded to, or wish to learn from the experience of this incident on the 4th of July. To thank all the providers who gave up their 4th of July celebrations to help their fellow citizens, the Solomons VRSFD turned to our friends and longtime supporters at Mission BBQ in Lexington Park who will be providing a meal for all providers who were attending the review. As first responders assist and support our communities in Southern Maryland, Mission BBQ continues their tradition of supporting our responders in return.
