On February 20th a very popular and well respected icon in our first due passed away in his home on Solomons Island after a battle with cancer. Mr. Alton Kersey was a vivid leader involved in many organizations within our community and was very well-known and respected by many. He had a love and passion for the water and loved his home located on Solomons Island. He rebuilt the original Wm B. Tennison in 1967 and was one of the founders of the Marine Museum in 1970. He assisted with the donations and helped raise money for our town clock that is part of the boardwalk and also was responsible for the dedication of the Waterman's Memorial. His history and involvement in our community is one to be remembered as he was an honorable citizen in our community.

One week prior to his passing, Mr. Kersey was released from the hospital and Hospice care. He wanted to go home and be with his family and see the island one last time. Our department was contacted by his family and it was arranged for us to bring him home. During his return home, we were able to provide him with one final tour of the island that he so loved.

In his honor, SVRSFD attended his Life Celebration with one of our units and offered our condolences to his family. It was our honor, as Mr. Kersey and his family wished, to have contributions sent to Solomons Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department in lieu of flowers. This is a true sentiment of how much of what we do means to our community and those we serve.

The Solomons Volunteers would like to extend a very sincere thanks to both the Kersey family and the community for the donations on his behalf. Our department prides itself on its dedication in protecting and helping our local communities. It cannot be put into words how grateful and honored we are for the contributions and being a part of Alton's life and legacy.

Sincerely,

The Solomons Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department Membership
