Strong Undertows

The Solomons Volunteers would like to extend their sincere condolences to all the families and friends affected by the tragic events off the shores of Cove Point these last couple weekends.

The Volunteers would also like to remind individuals that Cove Point is prone to severe undertows. This due to the way the point jets out from the Calvert County mainland. Two opposing currents one above and one under the surface of the water are created that can easily pull an adult individual underwater and hold them there. Whenever you are out swimming in our local waterways please be sure to check the current conditions of the water and weather in the area. If you are unsure about an area be sure to have proper floatation devices readily available. If you plan on swimming in areas that could be prone to strong undertows be sure to wear a personal floatation device. There are many different types made today which will not hinder the enjoyment of being out in the open water.

Have a happy and safe rest of the summer.
