August Member Spotlight !!!
We are starting out August with a big BANG. Please join us in congratulating Firefighter/EMT Jonathan Smitherman. Jonathan joined the SVRSFD in February 2019 and was promoted to Fire Sgt. in January 2021 due to his ability to be efficient and a mentor. Unfortunately for our department Jonathan had to step down as Fire Sgt. in June 2021 due to commitments from his position in the Navy.

Jonathan started with our department as an Aide with the intention to focus on the EMT side. While starting as an Aide, Jonathan had the motivational drive to complete his EMT course. The need for additional drivers sparked his interest and he then completed his EVOC class. Jonathan proceeded to explore and grow within the department by obtaining his Firefighter 1 and 2. In addition to these great accomplishments he has also obtained his Hazmat, Site Ops and Technical Rope Rescue.

Jonathan’s original goal when starting with SVRSFD was to gain skills for the volunteer service in the Navy evaluation system. Being on the ambulance would help him become a better operator on aircrafts assisting the SAR MED TECH. Once there, Jonathan couldn’t help but want to give more back to the community. He found so much love for his newly found family and community that he has a goal to remain in the Fire Service once he retires in another 3 to 4 years and is able to dedicate more of his time. “The family I have made at SVRSFD is great.”

I don’t think there is any better way to wrap this up than with Jonathan’s think great, be great attitude. “You do not need to have a title to lead. If you stay committed and hungry the opportunities will come.”
